Product review: Schwarzkopf Professional Essensity Hair Color, 4-68

Like many folks due to Corona Virus, I am not able to visit my hairdresser for several months, and the greys in my hair did not look good. I decided to color my own hair for the first time in my life.

In the last few months, I purchased three different Schwarzkopf colors, with 4-68 being the latest. I tried 4.0 Cappuccino kit, then Schwarzkopf Essensity 4.0, and this time Schwarzkopf Essensity 4-68.

They all gave me a dark brown color. I hope to add a bit more red with 4-68 but really did not notice a big difference compared to 4.0.

I was pleasantly surprised that Schwarzkopf Hair Color did not spell bad (note that the left-over color starts smelling bad overnight, so dispose of it before the smell develops). The overall process was pretty straightforward, and the color looks good and natural. I like the results of all three of my own color jobs.

I am writing this review three weeks after I applied a 4-68 color to see how it is holding up, and it is doing okay. By that, I mean that the roots lost some of the color, but the hair still looks acceptable. I can tell it will not last as long as the salon color job (I could go five weeks in between colors and with a home job I felt I had to reapply every four weeks), but it cost me eight times less, so it is not bad if I have to do it every four weeks.

The package includes only the tube of color; you need to buy the developer separately. I got Schwarzkopf (Schwarzkopf Essensity Oil Developer- 5.5% / 18 Volume- 33.8 oz). Since I use about 1 oz for each color, this developer bottle will last me for 34 applications. For my short hair, I use half of the tube of color. The package does not include a brush to spread the color, mixing container or gloves.

I started by applying chapstick around my hairline, so the color does not stick to the skin (I read about this tip on-line). Then I mixed the color and the developer.

I used the brush to paint color on my scalp, first around the hairline, then all over the scalp. I used my gloved hands to work the color into the hair and scalp and left the color on my head for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, I applied more color to the rest of the hair and again worked it with my hands. I waited another 6 minutes and then got into the shower to wash off the color. Note that I was wearing a t-shirt, and even though I did not really care about it, I realized that if I were to take it off before the shower, I would get the color all over it, so I got into the shower wearing the t-shirt.

One of the fears I had is that the color will stain my shower, my shower curtain, the walls, etc. Those fears were unsubstantiated. Once the water began running clear, I saw that there was no staining on the tub, walls, or shower curtain.

The entire coloring session took about an hour, including all the prep steps. I have short hair, and about half of the tube of color remained unused. I am pleased with the results and plan to do it again in four weeks.

Product review: Newtons Soft & Fruit Chewy Fig Cookies

Fig newtons are a long time favorites in our house.  The box from Amazon had an expiration date a year in the future and was quite fresh.  The box had four packages of 12 packs. Eack of the packs has 2 cookies. 1 pack is 1 serving size and is 200 calories. These are very tasty cookies - a little bit sweet, a little big tangy!

Product review: Progresso Traditional, New England Clam Chowder Soup Cans

The texture, thickness, and chunkiness of Progresso Clam chowder were fine, however, I was disappointed in the taste.  It just was not very good.  My local supermarket has Legal Seafood clam chowder available in the deli department, it is much better.  Unfortunately, it is not shelf-stable, requires refrigeration, and cannot be stored for as long.

Movie review: Call of the wild. Amazon early preview. Harrison Ford movie.

I saw this movie as "Early Preview" on Amazon Prime rentals. I enjoyed it. It is a touching story that pulls on your heartstrings. It felt to me a bit like a Disney animation movie because the dog scenes, especially at the very end, were very much like an animated cartoon.  The dog was clearly CGI'ed through the movie, but I enjoyed his clever human-like expressions.  The movie is based on the Jack London novel about the dog named Buck who was stolen from his home in California and sent to the Yukon, where he befriends an old outdoorsman, played by Harrison Ford.

Product review: Amy's Organic Lentil Soup, Vegan, 14.5 Ounce / Whole foods home delivery during COVID-19

This is my first order of Amy's Organic Lentil Soup.  This is a thick lentil soup with a pleasant flavor. Not too salty, not artificial tasting, not spicy. It has a label BPA free (I assume this refers to the liner).  I like that it has easy to open a pop up lid. It is also easy to prepare, we heat it up in the microwave.

Ingredients
Filtered Water, Organic Yellow Split Peas, Organic red lentils, Organic Carrots, Organic Tomato Purée, Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, shallots, Organic Garlic, Organic Ginger, Sea Salt, Organic Spices, Organic Turmeric, Organic Black Pepper.

This soup was part of my first on-line delivery from Whole Foods, and the ordering and delivery worked well.  6 of the 12 items were out due to COVID-19 and I got texts with substitutions, which I could accept or reject.  The delivery occurred within a promised two-hour period, with the substitution messages happening one hour before.  WholeFoods, of course, is not a bargain. The price of the items and the delivery tip did make it pretty expensive. However, in the current situation, it is a very helpful option to have.

Product review: Ambesonne Fabric Shower Curtains, Colorful Leaves

The description states the shower curtain is made out of polyester fabric, so I expected a textured fabric similar to window curtains. The fabric was not what I expected the polyester fabric to be; the material feels like nylon - smooth, slightly shiny, and not textured at all. The fabric texture is not a bad thing, just not what I expected.  The shower curtain had no scent.

The shower curtain fabric arrived with sharp creases from packing. It did not look good when I hung it. The label said "no ironing," but I am an experienced seamstress, so I know how to iron this type of fabric: iron on a warm setting and ironing from the reverse side. After I ironed the material, the shower curtain looked good.

Each leave of the design is 7.5" measured in the longest direction. The stock image is a pretty good representation of the color on the part that faces outside. The reverse side has much paler tones.

The hook holes are not reinforced; they are just buttonhole openings finished on a sewing machine. Those buttonholes areas are reinforced from the back with another strip of fabric (good).

The hooks enclosed in the package are white cheap-looking plastic loops, which I am not using. I did not throw them out to see if I can use them in my garden to hold up vines on the trellis. To hold the shower curtain and a liner, I purchased double shower curtain hooks, which are working beautifully and look good.

Overall, I am pleased with the shower curtain.

Book review: Ninety-Nine Cent Tour of Bar Harbor Maine (Photo Tour): Traveling Cheapskate, Ken Rossignol

I live in New England and Bar Harbor Maine is a place we visit every now and then. I wanted to see if this book would give me some new ideas of places to see, things to do, and places to eat.  It did not.

This book was not what I expected in many ways. This book has no text.  It is just a book of photos with captions.  The captions are written in an unusually small font that does not scale at all. Even on a large 30" computer monitor, the text was not readable. Zoom-in controls in the browser did not work to enlarge the fonts, so no matter what I tried I could not see what the author wrote. I was only able to look at the photos.  The photos were not particularly good. They were not artistic, they did not have good composition, the colors were washed out.   The photos did not give Bar Harbor justice.  The book did not make Bar Harbor look like a desirable place to visit.

Product review: Annie's Macaroni & Cheese, Shells & Real Aged Cheddar

I like the flavor of Annie's Mac and Cheese better than the Kraft products.  Annie's Mac and Cheese does not have the artificial flavor.   Good packages to have on hand for emergencies.

The key to making it really good is adding a little bit of warm milk to turn cheese powder into cheese sauce.  I use 1/4 cup of walk milk to make a smooth cheese sauce to which I add cooked pasta. If I add cheese powder to the pasta directly I can never get smooth sauce and it does not taste as good.

Product review: Always Radiant Feminine Pads for Women, Size 5

This pad uses a different from any other pads I have tried, it is foam rather than cotton.  It works very well: absorbent, scent-free, does not stink after it was used. Size 5 is very long and provides excellent protection. It uses good glue that comes off easily without tearing the pad when you remove it (a common problem with Kotex U).

I got my pack of 18 at a local CVS for just under $10, and now I see Amazon offers a much better price per pad when you get a pack of three for under $20.

Product review: Amy's Organic Alphabet Soup - 14.1 OZ - Home groceries delivery from WholeFoods DURING COVID-19

This my first order of Amy's Alphabet soup. It was a replacement on the home delivery order for a soup that was out of stock. It turned out a lot better then I expected. It was a tasty tomato soup with pasta, it does not taste like a kid's soup by a similar sounding name.

Product review: Jenny Lee, Bread Cinnamon Swirl, 18 Ounce - Whole Food - Grocery Home Delivery

This bread was a substitution for a bread that was not available during home grocery delivery.  It was okay.  The part I liked least was that the top of the bread was covered with granules of sugar.  The bread itself was sweet enough and it did not need that extra sugar which was messy on top of extra sweetness.  I would not select it again as my primary choice but would accept it if it was a substitution during COVID-19 times.

Product review: Premium Japanese Mayonnaise 400g (1 Bottle) by Tetsujin

I like the taste of Tetsujin Japanese mayo.  It is slightly sweater then your typical American mayo. It has no artificial after taste, I did not think it tasted eggy. I most frequently use it on sandwiches. I like how the bottle dispences it in a narrow ribbon so I can control how much I use better.

Product review: Pepto Bismol Cherry flavor. Diarrhea Relief, 12 Chewable Tablets

I was looking for a travel size Pepto Bismol with a better flavor.  This cherry flavor is not too strong but definitely more pleasant than the mouth-washy taste of the original.  I always found the original Pepto Bismol effective but really hated the flavor.  My husband likes the original flavor, so I know some people are okay with it, but if you are not this product fixes the problem.

The packaging is excellent.  Small and compact, closes well and stays closed in my purse. Each container is 2 5/8".  It does not get crushed like a blister pack I used to carry before this purchase.  To open it for the first time you need to remove the pink security strip at the top.  The top is a screw top, that helps it to stay closed in my purse.
